10,000 LFC GOALS
When Diogo Jota scored the opener in Liverpool’s Champions League match vs. FC Midtjylland on October 27th, 2020, it was the Reds’ 10,000th goal of all time in all competitions.
To celebrate this milestone, we compiled what some LFC Boston members consider their favorite goals of all time.
From Adam Zand
David Fairclough vs. St. Etienne
March 16, 1977 | Anfield | European Cup, 2nd Leg
Where were you watching?
Anfield Road with my stepfather
Why it’s my favorite:
The place was rocking all night, but it was deafening after Super Sub David Fairclough scored to put Liverpool through 3-1.
My only regret was not exchanging scarves with a St. Etienne supporter who asked me after the match.
Allez les Rouges, indeed.
From Jak Islam
Terry McDermott vs. Tottenham Hotspur
September 2, 1978 | Anfield
Why it’s my favorite:
It’s just an amazing end-to-end goal. Bob Paisley described it as “the best goal Anfield has ever seen.”
From Darren Foley
John Barnes vs. Queens Park Rangers
October 17, 1987 | Anfield
Where were you watching?
At home in Dublin, Ireland
Why it’s my favorite:
Class individual goal. Dispossess the midfielder on the half way line, rounds two defenders and slips it past the keeper. The ease in which he beats both defenders is astounding.
From Nick Sapia
Sadio Mane vs. Manchester City
January 14, 2018 | Anfield
Where were you watching?
My couch
Why it’s my favorite:
The 10 minute stretch where Liverpool absolutely blitzed City in the second half of this game, with goals from Firmino, Mane and Salah, is one of the most exhilarating stretches of football I’ve watched. Sadio had hit the post moments earlier, and the calmness with which he unleashes a perfect strike is incredible.
This game also felt like a bit of a sea change for the club, that they had finally arrived under Klopp, and obviously set the stage for the incredible Champions League tie against City a few months later.
From Garrett Labonte
Luis Suarez (3rd goal) vs. Norwich City
December 4, 2013 | Anfield
Where were you watching?
The Phoenix Landing
Why it’s my favorite:
Where to begin? First, you can pick any of these goals - the audacity of the first! - but how he creates the space then unleashes that finish for the third goal is something truly special.
From Sean Whooley
Sadio Mane vs. Aston Villa
November 2, 2019 | Villa Park
Where were you watching?
The Phoenix Landing
Why it’s my favorite:
Between the exasperation of conceding early, having VAR chalk off an equalizer and trailing for almost 90 minutes, the release of Mane's goal on a personal level, combined with the explosion of cheers at the Phoenix Landing, felt like nothing else before, even with all the amazing goals over the years.
It felt like an important moment and some people look back and say that win at Villa was the moment Liverpool won the 19/20 title. I can't say I was that confident in that moment, but it certainly proved that it would take everything to beat that team.
