this thread is actually very fitting to my situation. My grandfather is Italian, from Italy, speaks Italian, and I am nearly fluent through conversations with him and my 5 years of taking it at school. Being 12 during the '02 world cup, I kind of did what my grandfather told me to do and rooted for Italy, especially since soccer was on the backburner of my sports interest at the time. When I was a wise old 16 years of age, I went into the '06 WC all about the USA, bought my donovan USA jersey and folowed the USMNT closely. When Italy scored an own goal against USa to tie I was ecstatic. Now when USA was eventually eliminated I started to follow Italy just as closely, 1. due to my former allegiance and 2. because its just more fun to watch with a rooting interest. Now walking into this WC its still USA 1. Assuming USA cant win it, id love to see Italy pull a 5th WC and tie those arrogant Brazilian bastards, and if neither can happen, I'd love to see Stevie G get the most serious of hardware, espcially wearing the band

Just because it is the US team, doesn't mean you "have to" like them. I support the US team (went to UVA with several players who played on it at one point in time), but that doesn't mean I am a die-hard US fan. I have always followed England because thats where I was introduced to how great soccer could be. I have cheered for Sweden because I have family there. And now I follow Spain because I like the players and their style. I am hoping the US does well in the World Cup, but I don't think it's a requirement for being an American. I will, however, refrain from wearing my England Crouch jersey to the US-England game.
For not the first time, I would like to refer you to the laws of the land in which you are a resident of and freely choose to live:
"Treason against the United States, shall consist only in levying War against them, or in adhering to their Enemies, giving them Aid and Comfort."
Now please go to Europe or something.

Wow, lots of good stuff on this one. I'm going to have to come out and be honest and just admit - I root for US & England!
I know that my previous sentence is a contradiction within itself...but I've always loved England's team. It seems as though this has not been the experience for all you other scousers...but part of my love for Liverpool (Gerrard, Cara, Crouchie, Owen, Murphy etc...) definitely spilled over to the Three Lions. I know this doesn't mean much to most people, but I can't deny that lots of my heritage is English as well. I know it's not right, but it is what it is.
Plus, I can get away with telling people that the beanpole robotic dancing striker is my cousin...and get away with it!

Okay Amigo, go get your Spanish citizenship so. I think it's the saddest thing I've ever heard.

Nice, gentlemen.
*yawn* This is about as tiresome as the Lucas thread. I love that supporters of LIVERPOOL on this site - 99% of whom are not from Liverpool or even England - judge others on who or how they support. Who cares? Why care?

Andrew, I think you are my new best friend. Crouchie is the best.
As for the rest of you...I like to think of myself as a citizen of the world and enjoy expanding my horizons (which includes liking multiple international teams). Plus, you know I was hit by a car so you can take that as an excuse for my odd behavior.

Mission accomplished! Now what if I said I was a Yankee fan? (Don't worry, that would make me throw up.)
